Clinical Application
This uterine sound is used to determine uterine depth, orientation and cervical canal patency prior to intrauterine instrumentation. Common applications include pre-placement assessment for intrauterine devices (IUDs), guidance for dilators and curettes during dilation & curettage, and preparation for hysteroscopy or other diagnostic/operative gynecologic procedures. Tactile feedback from the instrument helps the clinician identify the direction of the uterine cavity and reduce the risk of creating a false passage.
Design & Configuration
The Sims pattern with a malleable shaft permits gentle contouring of the instrument to match individual cervical canal angulation, facilitating atraumatic navigation to the fundus. The rounded, atraumatic tip minimizes tissue trauma during sounding and instrument exchange. The extended 32 cm overall length provides additional reach for intraoperative use or when encountering atypical uterine positions, while the malleable construction allows the clinician to set and maintain a preferred curvature during the procedure.
