Clinical Application
Provides controlled separation of the vaginal walls to permit direct visualization of the cervix and vaginal fornices during gynecologic examinations and minor procedures. Common uses include cervical inspection and cleaning, Pap smear collection, IUD insertion and removal, and access for minor office-based cervical treatments. The 40 mm blade width of this size (Fig. 4) offers a balance between exposure and patient comfort for many adult patients.
Design & Configuration
The Fergusson bivalve design features two smooth, opposing blades (duckbill style) that open to create a clear working channel. A machined thumbscrew locking mechanism allows the speculum to be held open hands-free, which facilitates specimen collection and instrument use without needing continuous manual retraction. Rounded blade edges and a shallow profile help reduce soft-tissue compression and patient discomfort while maintaining stable exposure of the cervix.
