Clinical Application
Curved dilating bougies are used to safely dilate and calibrate tubular lumens. This Dittel-pattern, 28 Fr bougie is sized and configured for controlled dilation of benign esophageal strictures and for intraluminal calibration during upper-GI procedures where a firm, dimensionally stable introducer is required. It can be used to guide endoscopic instrumentation and to verify luminal diameter prior to stapling or resection.
Design & Configuration
The curved geometry follows the natural anatomic contour of the oropharynx and proximal esophagus, improving access and reducing point-loading on mucosa during advancement. The 28 Fr circumference provides a predictable luminal diameter for calibration or dilation, while the rounded atraumatic tip minimizes mucosal catching and allows smoother negotiation across strictures. The rigid, controlled profile gives the operator tactile feedback during passage and withdrawal, aiding safe, incremental dilation.
