Clinical Application
Van Buren-style urethral bougies provide controlled, graded dilation and calibration of the urethral lumen. A 22 FG caliber is commonly used in adult urologic practice to establish or confirm a target lumen diameter, to dilate short urethral strictures, and to assist placement or exchange of catheters and introducer sheaths when negotiation of the native urethra is difficult. The instrument is used both in clinic settings and in the operating room alongside cystoscopy and other endourologic procedures.
Design & Configuration
The classic Van Buren configuration features a tapered, smoothly polished shaft terminating in a rounded, atraumatic tip. The tapered geometry allows progressive dilation as the instrument is advanced, while the polished surface reduces friction against mucosa. The slight anatomic curvature of the pattern helps the instrument follow the natural male urethral axis for more controlled passage and less mucosal trauma compared with straight probes.
