Clinical Application
Provides stable, atraumatic retraction of ribs and chest wall to expose the thoracic cavity during open thoracic procedures such as posterolateral thoracotomy, exploratory thoracotomy, and cases that convert from minimally invasive approaches. The instrument’s bladed spreader arms maintain separation of adjacent ribs to improve visualization and access for dissection, stapling, anastomosis, and prosthetic placement.
Design & Configuration
The Castaneda design uses opposing bladed arms and a progressive opening mechanism to allow controlled, incremental separation of the ribs. The bladed geometry distributes contact pressure across the rib surface to reduce focal stress on bone and soft tissue. A progressive opening control permits fine adjustment of exposure and secure retention at the desired width, helping the surgical team optimize visualization while minimizing traumatic force during gradual expansion.
