Clinical Application

This four‑blade Macintosh set covers the common clinical range for airway management. The included sizes allow clinicians to select blades appropriate for smaller pediatric airways through large adult airways: smaller blades for pediatric or small adult patients and larger blades to expose the adult glottic inlet. The curved Macintosh geometry is used for direct laryngoscopy to indirectly elevate the epiglottis via placement in the vallecula, improving visualization of the vocal cords during orotracheal intubation, suctioning, and airway assessment.

Design & Configuration

The Macintosh curved blade is designed to engage the vallecula so that forward lift of the handle elevates the epiglottis without directly grasping it. This curved profile provides a working channel and lateral flanges that help retract the tongue and soft tissues, creating a more consistent line of sight to the glottis. Providing sizes #1, #2 (78 mm), #3 and #4 in a conventional set ensures rapid size selection across typical patient populations and reduces the need to stock individual blades separately.
