Clinical Application
This instrument provides controlled lateral separation of the ribs to expose the pleural cavity and intrathoracic structures. It is intended for use in open thoracotomy approaches (anterolateral, posterolateral and other thoracic access procedures) where sustained, stable retraction of one or more ribs is required to facilitate pulmonary, pleural or mediastinal procedures.
Design & Configuration
The Finochietto pattern uses a central screw-driven ratchet (rack-and-pinion) to convert manual rotation into smooth, progressive blade advancement. The matched blades are listed as 36 x 45 mm to indicate differing blade face dimensions, enabling secure engagement of the rib surface while accommodating anatomical variation. The screw and ratchet arrangement provide fine control of spread and a self-retaining hold so the retractor remains stable during instrument exchange or operative manipulation.
