Clinical Application
This classic thoracic retractor is designed to provide controlled lateral chest-wall separation during open thoracotomy and other open chest procedures. The blade footprint and self-retaining mechanism facilitate exposure of the pleural cavity, lungs, mediastinum and hilar structures for procedures such as lobectomy, decortication, exploration after trauma, and other intrathoracic operations where sustained, stable rib retraction is required.
Design & Configuration
The instrument uses a ratcheting, self-retaining configuration to allow gradual, controlled distraction of the ribs while maintaining hands-free exposure once the desired span is achieved. The 31x45 mm blade footprints are sized to distribute pressure across the rib edge and costal margin to reduce focal stress on bone and soft tissue. The 210 mm overall length provides working reach appropriate for standard thoracic cavities while preserving mechanical advantage for incremental opening and secure retention.
