Clinical Application
Macintosh size #4 is a standard adult curved laryngoscope blade used to obtain a view of the glottic opening during direct laryngoscopy for orotracheal intubation and airway assessment. The flexible-tip feature provides controlled tip deflection at the distal end of the blade to facilitate manipulation of the epiglottis and fine adjustment of the line-of-sight in anatomies where small positional changes improve vocal cord visualization. This blade is suitable for routine anesthetic intubations, perioperative airway management, and emergency airway procedures in larger adult patients.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh curved geometry is designed to sit in the vallecula and lift the epiglottis indirectly to expose the glottis. The flexible-tip modification allows the distal segment to be deflected slightly without repositioning the entire blade, enabling precise control when aligning the airway axis or when limited cervical motion restricts blade maneuverability. Conventional blade construction provides a rigid proximal shaft for controlled insertion while the articulated tip reduces the need for excessive force and helps minimize soft-tissue and dental contact during tube placement.
Instrument Specifications
- Instrument type: Laryngoscope blade
- Pattern / model: Macintosh (Mac) #4
- Configuration: Flexible-tip, conventional (w/bulb) blade
- Tip / jaw pattern: Curved Macintosh blade
- Typical surgical use: Direct orotracheal intubation and airway exposure in adult patients
- Reusable: Yes
Material & Construction
Manufactured from medical-grade stainless steel for durability and corrosion resistance. The conventional design incorporates integrated illumination (w/bulb) to provide direct line lighting at the blade tip. The flexible distal tip uses a mechanical articulation that preserves the rigidity of the proximal shaft while permitting controlled tip movement. The instrument is designed for repeated use and appropriate sterilization in line with facility protocols.
Quality & Compliance
Manufactured by FDA-registered OEM facilities and produced under strict quality control standards.
Brand Comparison
Comparable in form and function to equivalent instruments offered by major US medical suppliers.
