Clinical Application
Macintosh curved blades are a standard tool for direct laryngoscopy to facilitate visualization of the glottic opening and placement of endotracheal tubes. Offering sizes #1, #2 (90 mm), #3 and #4 in a conventional set allows clinicians to select an appropriately sized blade for neonates/infants (#1), pediatric/smaller patients (#2), standard adult patients (#3) and larger adult anatomies (#4). These blades are used in operating rooms, emergency departments, intensive care units and ambulatory surgery centers for routine and difficult airway management when a curved blade technique is preferred.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh curvature is designed to seat in the vallecula and indirectly lift the epiglottis to expose the vocal cords, minimizing soft-tissue obstruction during intubation. A set of four detachable blades provides sizing flexibility for rapid selection based on patient anatomy. Conventional blade geometry offers tactile feedback and familiar ergonomics for clinicians trained in Macintosh technique, and the detachable configuration permits efficient cleaning and sterilization between cases.
