Clinical Application
This set provides the core Macintosh blade sizes commonly required for airway management. The curved Macintosh geometry permits indirect elevation of the epiglottis via placement in the vallecula, improving direct visualization of the vocal cords for orotracheal intubation and routine airway assessment. A three-blade kit (#1, #2 (90 mm), and #3) supports clinicians working across a range of patient anatomies and procedural needs, reducing the need to switch instrument types during induction.
Design & Configuration
Macintosh curved blades are shaped to displace the tongue and transmit lifting force to the hyoepiglottic ligament by seating the blade tip in the vallecula. The conventional blade configuration offers a broad flange for oral soft-tissue retraction and a smooth leading edge to minimize mucosal trauma. Providing sizes #1 through #3 in one set enables selection of a shorter blade for smaller oral cavities or a longer blade for larger adults without changing the fundamental technique or handle interface.
