Clinical Application
This down-biting Kerrison is intended for precise removal of bone and ligament in confined spinal and cranial corridors. The 6 mm bite size provides controlled, incremental bone excision suitable for laminotomies, laminectomies, foraminotomies and targeted decompression around neural elements. The down-oriented jaw is optimized for working beneath the lamina and undercuts where access and visualization are limited, allowing the surgeon to remove bone toward the surgical field with minimal collateral tissue displacement.
Design & Configuration
The instrument combines a Ferris-Smith–style robust handle geometry with a Kerrison down-biting tip to deliver power and control when tackling cortical and cancellous bone at the laminar margin. The 18 cm overall length gives reach into deeper operative corridors while preserving tactile feedback at the bite. The 6 mm jaw dimension balances tissue removal efficiency with the ability to work incrementally in tight spaces, reducing the likelihood of over-resection and facilitating fine control adjacent to dura and neural structures.
