Clinical Application

Designed for controlled, handheld retraction of cortical and subcortical brain tissue during intracranial procedures. The two blade widths give the surgeon the option to choose a narrower or wider working surface for cortical exposure, tumor resection corridors, hematoma evacuation and subdural dissection while minimizing focal pressure on brain tissue. Typically used in open cranial and microsurgical approaches where delicate, temporary retraction is required.

Design & Configuration

The double-ended Scoville configuration provides two usable blade widths—16 mm and 19 mm—on a single 200 mm shaft, allowing rapid intraoperative exchange without changing instruments. The long shaft length permits access to deeper operative fields while keeping the surgeon's hand clear of the immediate field. Flat, smooth blades distribute contact pressure over a wider surface compared with pointed instruments, helping to reduce localized tissue compression during manual retraction.

Instrument Specifications

  • Instrument type: Brain spatula (Scoville)
  • Blade widths: 16 mm and 19 mm (double-ended)
  • Overall length: 200 mm
  • Blade profile: Flat, smooth blunt spatula blades for gentle retraction
  • Primary use: Cortical and subcortical retraction in neurosurgery
