Clinical Application
This curved Macintosh blade is configured to facilitate direct laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation by enabling indirect elevation of the epiglottis when the blade tip is placed in the vallecula. Size #2 with a 78 mm blade length is commonly selected for pediatric patients, smaller adolescents and adults, or patients with smaller oral cavities where a shorter working length is desirable. It is used routinely in operating rooms, procedural suites and emergency airway management for visualization of the vocal cords and placement of endotracheal tubes.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh geometry features a smooth, curved profile with a broad flange that displaces the tongue while the blade tip is positioned in the vallecula to indirectly lift the epiglottis. The 78 mm length provides controlled reach to the hypopharynx without excessive distal projection, helping reduce the risk of over-insertion in smaller patients. The curved contour also supports typical macintosh laryngoscopy technique, allowing alignment of oral, pharyngeal and laryngeal axes for improved line-of-sight during intubation.
