Clinical Application
This curved Macintosh blade is intended for direct laryngoscopy to visualize the glottic opening and facilitate orotracheal intubation in adult patients. The #3 length (108 mm) is routinely used for average adult anatomy, allowing the clinician to position the blade in the vallecula to indirectly lift the epiglottis and expose the vocal cords. It is suited for use in operating rooms, procedural suites, emergency departments, and pre-hospital settings where reusable metal blades are preferred.
Design & Configuration
The Macintosh curvature is engineered to be placed in the vallecula so the epiglottis is lifted indirectly when upward traction is applied. This geometry improves line-of-sight to the laryngeal inlet while minimizing direct pressure on the epiglottis and posterior pharynx. A conventional bulb-type illumination provides direct light at the distal blade; this simple incandescent-style lighting is serviceable in the field and can be used with standard power handles. The #3 size balances reach and control for typical adult airways while reducing risk of excessive advancement deep into the oropharynx.
