Clinical Application
Used to achieve controlled mechanical dilation of the cervical canal to a target diameter of 8.5 mm. Commonly employed as part of uterine access procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C), pre-hysteroscopy cervical preparation, intrauterine device placement, and treatment of cervical stenosis. The instrument is used sequentially with smaller and larger dilators to dilate gradually while minimizing cervical trauma.
Design & Configuration
The single-ended, straight Hegar design features a gently tapered, rounded tip that facilitates atraumatic entry into the cervical os and predictable radial expansion of the canal. The uniform cylindrical shaft provides tactile feedback to the operator during progressive dilation, helping to monitor resistance and tissue response. The single-ended configuration offers a solid working end for controlled, one-directional dilation and is commonly chosen when a dedicated size is required without the need for a double-ended set.
