Clinical Application
Designed for otologic procedures that require controlled access to the Eustachian tube, this catheter facilitates transtympanic catheterization for insufflation, irrigation, aspiration, evaluation of tubal patency, and delivery of topical medications. It is used during myringotomy, middle-ear toileting, diagnostic tubal testing, and other clinic- or OR-based ear procedures where precise cannulation of the Eustachian orifice is required.
Design & Configuration
The curved, rigid shaft geometry aligns with the anatomic axis of the Eustachian tube to enable controlled insertion from the tympanic membrane side. An atraumatic, rounded tip minimizes mucosal trauma during entry and advancement. Rigid construction transmits tactile feedback to the operator for improved control while negotiating the cartilaginous portion of the tube. The proximal end is sized to accept attachment of irrigation or insufflation devices commonly used in otologic practice.
Instrument Specifications
- Instrument type: Eustachian catheter (Itard Fig.2)
- Configuration: Curved, rigid shaft for transtympanic access
- Tip: Atraumatic, rounded tip for gentle cannulation
- Typical use: Insufflation, irrigation, aspiration, topical drug delivery, tubal patency assessment
