Clinical Application
Designed for pediatric thoracic procedures, this compact Burford rib spreader provides controlled separation of the ribs and intercostal tissues to expose the pleural cavity, mediastinum, or operative field in infants and children. The 13 cm frame and two blade profiles allow selection of a blade footprint appropriate to narrow intercostal spaces while maintaining stable exposure during procedures such as pediatric thoracotomy, chest wall procedures, and limited thoracic access.
Design & Configuration
The short 13 cm frame reduces overall span and provides fine control suitable for smaller chest cavities. Two interchangeable blade pairs give the operator options for blade width/depth to match patient anatomy and incision geometry: the 30x42x130 mm set for narrower spaces and the 41x42x130 mm set for slightly larger pediatric chests. Removable blades permit quick configuration changes intraoperatively and simplify cleaning and sterilization. A positive locking mechanism on the spreader frame enables incremental, controlled retraction to minimize rib edge trauma and maintain a stable operative field.
