Clinical Application
Provides controlled, atraumatic retraction of the ribs and intercostal tissues to create and maintain exposure of the thoracic cavity during open thoracic procedures. Commonly used for thoracotomy, lung resections, mediastinal access, esophageal surgery, and any procedure requiring sustained lateral separation of the ribs. The paired blade configuration permits symmetric spreading and stable exposure while minimizing focal pressure on the ribs.
Design & Configuration
The classic Finochietto design employs a pair of opposing blades mounted to a central rack-and-pinion ratchet for incremental, locked spreading. Blade geometry distributes force along the rib contour to reduce localized pressure and permit secure positioning at a chosen opening. The paired blade format allows surgeons to select orientation and depth appropriate to the intercostal space, facilitating efficient wound access and instrument maneuvering.
