Clinical Application
This instrument provides controlled lateral separation of the ribs to expose the thoracic cavity. It is used to maintain reproducible intercostal retraction during open thoracotomy, procedures requiring extended exposure of the lung, pleura, mediastinum or chest wall, and in trauma cases where stable rib spreading is required. The mechanism allows the surgeon to adjust and lock distraction incrementally to optimize exposure while minimizing undue force on costal margins.
Design & Configuration
The classic self-retaining screw-and-rack geometry enables slow, precise distraction and hands-free maintenance of the spread position. The paired blades are designed to distribute retraction force across the rib surface, improving tissue visualization and reducing focal pressure on the intercostal spaces. The compact 143 mm overall length and 28x30 mm blade footprint are intended to offer a balance of access and instrument profile for standard thoracic exposures.
