Clinical Application
This instrument provides controlled lateral retraction of the ribs to expose the thoracic cavity during open thoracic procedures. It is used to separate the intercostal space for access to the lungs, pleura, mediastinum and other intrathoracic structures during thoracotomy, chest wall repair and select cardiothoracic approaches. The compact blade dimensions are suited to limited exposures and narrower intercostal spaces where precise, incremental spreading is required.
Design & Configuration
The Castaneda pattern features paired blade-style tips sized for targeted engagement of the rib margins and costal arch. An adjustable, self-retaining mechanism enables incremental spreading and stable, hands-free exposure so the assistant can focus on tissue handling. The blade geometry and contact area are intended to distribute pressure along the rib edge, improving tissue protection and helping maintain a consistent operative field without frequent repositioning.
