Clinical Application

Flexible 9 mm tracheal tubes are used to establish and maintain a secure airway during general anesthesia, procedural sedation, ICU care, and operative procedures in otolaryngology and head & neck surgery. The flexible design minimizes kinking and allows the tube to follow patient anatomy during positioning, making it useful when neck movement, surgical access, or angled placement is required. A 9 mm nominal lumen is commonly chosen for adult airway management when a larger internal diameter is desired to facilitate ventilation and suctioning.

Design & Configuration

The Figure 5 geometry provides an anatomic bend that helps align the tube with the glottic opening and reduces compression of the lumen when the patient’s head and neck are repositioned. Flexibility helps the tube conform to oral or pharyngeal contours and reduces the risk of kinking compared with rigid tubes. This configuration is beneficial for procedures where repeated repositioning or a more compliant airway conduit is required, and it facilitates passage of bronchoscopes or suction catheters when indicated.
