Clinical Application
This left-curved costal periosteal elevator is designed for controlled subperiosteal dissection along the ribs and costal cartilage in adult patients. Common applications include exposure and mobilization of the rib periosteum during thoracotomy, harvesting of costal cartilage or rib segments for reconstructive procedures, and elevation of periosteum during rib fracture repair or implant placement. The left orientation is intended for approaches along the left costal arch where the curvature of the instrument conforms to the anatomical contour.
Design & Configuration
The left-curved geometry follows the convex contour of the rib, allowing the blade to remain flush with the bone surface while minimizing soft-tissue snagging. At 17 cm overall length the instrument provides reach into the adult chest wall without excessive shaft length that can reduce tactile control. The periosteal/spatula-style blade facilitates blunt and sharp subperiosteal elevation to separate periosteum from cortical bone, while a narrow profile helps limit collateral soft-tissue trauma and improves visualization in confined thoracic exposures. The balance between blade length and shaft rigidity supports precise leverage during controlled dissection.
